Staff

Dui Hua’s staff is made up of dedicated professionals with many years of experience in China and in the field of human rights. The staff members listed below work with researchers and volunteers around the world.

John Kamm, Executive Director, is also the Founder of The Dui Hua Foundation. A graduate of Princeton and Harvard universities, Kamm was the Hong Kong representative of the National Council for US-China Trade from 1976 to 1981. He was president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong in 1990 and has served as a director of the National Committee on US-China Relations. Since 1990, when he began his advocacy work on behalf of prisoners, Kamm has made more than 100 trips to Beijing and other parts of China in an effort to engage the Chinese government in a dialogue on human rights. For his work in the area of corporate responsibility, Kamm was awarded the Best Global Practices Award by former President Bill Clinton in June 1997. He was also granted the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award by President George W. Bush in December 2001 and a MacArthur Fellowship in September 2004.


Irene Chan Kamm, Senior Manager of Finance and Operations, was on the founding team of The Dui Hua Foundation, and concurrently serves as Treasurer. A Sociology graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, she also earned a Master of Social Science in Economics from the University of Hong Kong. Prior to joining the business sector, Irene worked as a statistician and economist at the Hong Kong government. Her career in business involved managing the research department for a major international consulting firm and overseeing finance and administration at Diamond Shamrock China and Diamond Shamrock Far East. Her work at Dui Hua focuses on financial planning, administration of grants, personnel and all aspects of non-profit compliance.

Joshua Rosenzweig, Senior Manager of Research and Hong Kong Operations, oversees Dui Hua’s research activities while heading up the foundation's office in Hong Kong. After joining Dui Hua in 2002, he developed Dui Hua’s comprehensive database of information about Chinese political and religious prisoners and has written the recent volumes in our Occasional Publications series. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley (M.A., C. Phil. in Modern Chinese History) and Swarthmore College (B.A. in Asian Studies with highest honors), Josh is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and has extensive research experience in Chinese archives and libraries.

 

Kevin Li, IT and Office Manager, was born in Shanghai and immigrated to the United States after graduating from high school. Kevin holds a B.S. in Computer Science from San Francisco State University and is a Certified Microsoft Professional. Kevin has been with Dui Hua since the foundation was established in 1999.

 

Martin Witte, Publications Manager, joined Dui Hua in 2006 with considerable experience in writing, editing, translation, and research work focused on China. Before joining Dui Hua, Martin contributed to many projects dealing with China’s development, environment, politics, and education. He has worked as a newspaper correspondent and spent four years in China during two stints of teaching English at institutions in Wuhan, Chengdu, and Dalian. Martin earned an M.A. in International Policy Studies from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, specializing in Chinese Studies, and holds a B.A. in English Writing from Knox College.

 

Flora Lee, Research and Hong Kong Operations Associate, is a native of Hong Kong and joined Dui Hua in July 2007. She earned a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in Environmental Science and Policy from Columbia University after her undergraduate studies at Oberlin College. While at Oberlin, she completed a B.A. in Environmental Studies and focused her senior thesis on the political and economic factors influencing Hong Kong’s water supply from Mainland China. She has served as an intern consultant for the Barretto Bay Conservancy, an NGO in New York. In addition to accounting and administrative responsibilities for the Hong Kong branch, Flora conducts research for the foundation’s “mass incident” database.


Candy Or, Accountant and Gifts Administrator, was born in Hong Kong and studied Education in college prior to moving to the United States in 2000. She is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and the Golden Key National Honor Society. Candy graduated with honors from San Francisco State University with a B.S. in Business Administration and a concentration in Accounting and Corporate Finance. She has been with Dui Hua since 2004.

 

Lillian Sie, Administrative Assistant, joined Dui Hua in September 2008 after interning at the Asia Society, an educational non-profit. A graduate of Mount Holyoke College, she holds a B.A. in International Relations with a concentration on East Asian Studies. Lillian went to Beijing during her junior year in college to study Chinese under the Associated Colleges in China program and spent a summer teaching classes to rural schoolchildren at various sites in China.

 

Tobias Smith, Program Associate, came to Dui Hua in September 2008, after working for a non-profit that defends prisoners’ rights in California. He has spent more than five years living, studying, and working throughout East Asia, and he received a Fulbright Fellowship in 2005 to research Modern Buddhism in China. Tobias holds a B.A. in Philosophy and East Asian Studies from Oberlin College.  Tobias co-ordinates the foundation's programs in juvenile justice and prisoner issues.

 

Luke Wong, Research Assistant, is a native of Hong Kong and joined Dui Hua in October 2008. A graduate of the University of Hong Kong majoring in History and European Studies, he is also a M. Phil degree holder in History with a concentration in racial and class relations in colonial Hong Kong. Luke conducts research and assists with updating the prisoner database.
